Ghana Black Queens learn 2027 World Cup playoff opponents

Ghana’s Black Queens now know the road they must travel to reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A demanding preliminary playoff draw has placed Ghana alongside Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea, with only the top two teams able to move closer to the biggest stage.

The mini-tournament will run from November 24 to December 5, 2026. Ghana will begin against Ecuador before meeting Uzbekistan and then Papua New Guinea, making every match important from the opening whistle.

The Black Queens are chasing their first World Cup appearance since 2007. Their hopes of automatic qualification disappeared at the 2027 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a painful 2-1 quarter-final defeat to eventual finalists Malawi.

Ghana responded when the pressure was highest. They beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the play-in match, earning a second chance to fight for a place at the World Cup.

Now comes a different challenge. The round-robin format means Ghana must find consistency across all three games, with the top two teams progressing to the final phase of the playoffs.

The final stage will bring even tougher opposition. Ghana could face representatives from CONCACAF, UEFA and Venezuela-CONMEBOL, with three teams eventually securing World Cup places.

For the Black Queens, the Ecuador opener could set the tone for the entire campaign. A strong start would build confidence, while any slip could make the remaining fixtures much harder.

There is also a sense of unfinished business around Ghana’s campaign. The team came close at the WAFCON, only to fall short against Malawi, but the victory over Côte d’Ivoire showed they still had the character to respond.

The reward is enormous. Ghana must now turn that resilience into consistency, because this playoff route offers no room for passengers.

The Black Queens have been given another door to the World Cup. Now they must find the key.
