Newcastle United have made another major statement in the transfer market. The Magpies have signed Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for £51m, taking their summer spending to a huge £262m.
Fernandez-Pardo has signed a long-term contract at St James’ Park and will wear the No 20 shirt. Newcastle see the Belgium international as a signing on the same level as Nico Gonzalez, who arrived from Manchester City for £50m last week.
The 21-year-old forward arrives after a strong season in France. He scored eight goals in 41 appearances for Lille and has now earned a place in Belgium’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
His international journey has taken an interesting path. Fernandez-Pardo previously switched his allegiance to Spain and attended youth training camps, but he never played a competitive match for the country.
Now, his club career is moving into a new phase. His arrival has also opened the door for Nick Woltemade to leave Newcastle, with the striker joining Juventus on a season-long loan.
Juventus will pay Newcastle a £3.5m loan fee. There is no option or obligation for the Italian club to buy Woltemade at the end of the season.
It is a notable move for Woltemade, who only joined Newcastle last year for a club-record £69m. His temporary departure shows the scale of competition inside Eddie Howe’s attacking group.
Fernandez-Pardo is already excited by what awaits him. “I know the club, I know about the stadium, I know it’s a fantastic atmosphere,” he told Newcastle’s official channels.
He also praised the team’s aggressive style, saying Newcastle “wants to attack, get forward, really chase teams and go after them.”
Head coach Matthias Jaissle believes the new signing has the tools to make an immediate impact. “Matias is a highly technical player with explosiveness in his game,” he said.
“He can score and assist, he has courage and he has the ability to take players on.” For Newcastle, the message is clear: the spending is big, the ambition is bigger, and Fernandez-Pardo is the latest piece of an increasingly powerful attack.
