Spain booked a thrilling quarter-final clash against Euro 2024 hosts Germany after overcoming an early scare to comfortably defeat Georgia.

In their debut major tournament appearance, Georgia initially weathered heavy pressure from Spain before stunning the crowd at Cologne Stadium with an unexpected 18th-minute lead.

Robin le Normand inadvertently deflected Otar Kakabadze’s cross into his own net, concluding a swift counter-attack and momentarily silencing the supporters behind Spain’s goal.

Georgia’s jubilation was palpable, with substitutes rushing to celebrate with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the corner.

Despite this boost, Spain’s persistence paid off as Rodri, of Manchester City, rifled a shot into the bottom corner to equalize, overcoming goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili’s impressive performance.

Spain continued to dominate offensively, creating numerous opportunities. They eventually capitalized when Fabian Ruiz headed in a cross from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Georgia fought valiantly, with Napoli’s Kvaratskhelia nearly scoring the tournament’s standout goal with a clever chip from midfield that narrowly missed the target.

However, Spain’s controlled possession game prevailed, with Nico Williams firing a powerful shot into the roof of the net to make it 3-1, followed by Dani Olmo’s precise finish to seal the victory.

Next up for Spain are European giants and tournament hosts Germany in Stuttgart on Friday, while Georgia bows out after an impressive tournament run that exceeded expectations.
