Declan Rice believes Harry Kane deserves to lift the Ballon d’Or on Monday after another outstanding year that has strengthened the England captain’s case for football’s biggest individual honour.
Rice and Kane both scored as Arsenal drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday. Their battle offered a reminder of Kane’s quality, with the striker scoring from the penalty spot and creating Bayern’s opening goal.
Speaking after the match, Rice made his position clear. “For me, he’s the clear winner,” he said in an interview. “I think his numbers speak for themselves. The year he’s had has been remarkable.”
Kane’s scoring record has been exceptional. He registered 73 goals in 65 matches last season, alongside eight assists, and has continued that form into the current campaign.
Rice believes Kane’s consistency, experience and influence set him apart from his rivals. The Arsenal midfielder also praised the striker’s ability to make life difficult for opponents.
“When you play with him, you realise how good he is,” Rice added. “When you play against him, you see how much of a pain it is.”
Kane showed both sides of his game against Arsenal. His clever pass helped Alphonso Davies score Bayern’s first goal before he converted a penalty after the break. Rice later rescued a draw for Arsenal with an 82nd-minute equaliser.
Since joining Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, Kane has continued to rewrite the record books. He recently became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, achieving the milestone in just 98 appearances.
However, his Ballon d’Or challenge faces stiff competition from players including Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe. Kane could become the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001.
Rice also praised Kane’s character and leadership, describing him as an outstanding person beyond football. He hopes Monday’s ceremony brings a reward that reflects the striker’s remarkable career.
For Kane, the wait continues. For Rice, the verdict is already in.
