Ghana’s return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations ended in heartbreak as the Black Queens fell 2-0 to defending champions South Africa in a spirited but wasteful opener.
Ghana took to the field for their first WAFCON appearance since 2018. Early intent from the Black Queens hinted at promise, with Anasthesia Achiaa rattling the crossbar and Andile Dlamini stretched into action.
But momentum swung sharply in the 28th minute when Grace Asantewaa was penalised for a challenge on Noxolo Cesane inside the box. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, coolly slotting home to give Banyana Banyana the lead.
Just five minutes later, the defending champions showed their cutting edge again. Jermaine Seoposenwe drilled a precise low finish beyond Cynthia Konlan to double South Africa’s advantage before the break.
To their credit, Ghana refused to fold. Asantewaa, eager to atone, tested Dlamini with a strike from distance. Doris Boaduwaa, Ghana’s reigning Women’s Footballer of the Year, nearly clawed one back but couldn’t control a bouncing cross on the counter.
Kim Bjorkegren’s side started the second half brightly, pressing high and creating chances. Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu both struck the woodwork in agonising fashion, while substitute Princess Marfo added urgency with a powerful effort parried away.
Despite their dominance after the interval, the Black Queens couldn’t find the breakthrough. Wastefulness in the final third and South Africa’s composure proved decisive.
The result leaves Ghana with no margin for error for the remaining group games against Mali and Tanzania. Their performance showed flashes of quality, but in tournament football, finishing is everything.
