In a stunning turn of events, Benin has emerged victorious against Nigeria, securing a top spot in the World Cup qualifiers for Group C.

The match, which took place in Abidjan due to Benin’s stadium constraints, saw Benin overcoming the odds to defeat Nigeria and shake up the standings.

The victory was particularly significant for Benin’s coach, Gernot Rohr, who faced challenges in his previous role with Nigeria.

The win lifted Benin to the top of Group C with seven points, surpassing Lesotho by two points.

Despite Nigeria’s strong reputation as six-time World Cup qualifiers and recent runners-up in the Africa Cup of Nations, they struggled in the qualifiers, lying fifth with just three points after a series of draws and a loss.

This unexpected defeat has put pressure on Nigeria’s coach, Finidi George, who faces criticism following the disappointing result.

The match saw Nigeria taking an early lead with Raphael Onyedika’s goal, but Benin swiftly responded with goals from Jodel Dossou and captain Steve Mounie before half-time, securing a lead they maintained till the final whistle.

With this victory, Benin now leads the table with seven points. However, the road to the World Cup is still long, and Nigeria will need to produce improved performances in their remaining matches to secure a spot in the tournament.

The Super Eagles will face tough challenges ahead as they aim to bounce back from this setback in their upcoming matches against Rwanda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, and Benin later in 2025.

The pressure is on for Nigeria to turn their fortunes around and secure their place in the World Cup.
