Arsenal have finally landed their man. Viktor Gyökeres has joined the Gunners from Sporting CP in a blockbuster €73 million total package deal, with the Swedish striker signing a five-year contract and taking the legendary No.14 shirt.
After weeks of negotiations, the Premier League runners-up confirmed the deal on Saturday. The transfer is worth €63 million up front, with a further €10 million in performance-based add-ons.
The 27-year-old arrives as Arsenal’s sixth summer signing, following the likes of Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Mikel Arteta hailed the striker’s arrival, calling him “quick and powerful” with “incredible goalscoring numbers.”
Gyökeres was electric last season. He netted 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting, including 39 in the league, leading the club to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles. It was his second straight year finishing as top scorer in Portugal.
“I started here in England, and it feels like a long time ago,” Gyökeres told Arsenal’s website. “Now I want to prove myself and perform with this team. To join a club like Arsenal will help me get even better.”
He previously had stints with Brighton, Coventry, and Swansea, but it was his two seasons at Sporting that transformed him into one of Europe’s most feared finishers. His tally stands at 97 goals in 102 games since moving to Portugal in 2023.
At international level, Gyökeres has scored 15 goals in 26 appearances for Sweden. His signature celebration has become a familiar sight across Europe, and fans at the Emirates will be hoping to see plenty more of it.
He inherits the iconic No.14 shirt once worn by Thierry Henry, the club’s all-time leading scorer. Arsenal supporters will hope Gyökeres can bring that same killer instinct as they chase their first league title since 2004.
The signing fills a glaring hole in Arsenal’s attack. After three straight seasons finishing second, Arteta now has a striker capable of turning chances into goals.
