Political Affiliation: Movement for Change (Independent Political Movement)

Previous Positions/Portfolios Occupied:

  • Minister for Trade and Industry (2017 – 2023): Served under the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo, where he oversaw Ghana’s trade policies, industrialization projects, and initiatives like ‘One District, One Factory.’

 

  • Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States (2001 – 2003): Appointed during President John Kufuor’s tenure, strengthening Ghana-US diplomatic and trade relations.

 

  • Minister of Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development, and Presidential Special Initiatives (2003 – 2007): Played a key role in driving trade reforms, promoting private sector development, and spearheading special initiatives to boost industrial growth during the Kufuor administration.

 

  • Trade Advisor at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA): Coordinated the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focusing on trade policy development across the continent.

Background: Throughout his career, he has been recognised for his efforts in promoting industrialisation, economic growth, and entrepreneurship in Ghana. His tenure as Trade Minister was marked by significant initiatives to foster private sector development and create jobs through industrialisation strategies.

Political Journey: Initially a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen contested for the NPP’s flagbearership multiple times but was not successful. After the 2023 flagbearership race, he resigned from the NPP and launched the Movement for Change, an independent political movement through which he will contest the 2024 general elections as a Presidential candidate.
