Spain finally clinched a gold medal in athletics.
María Pérez led the way, crossing the finish line first in the marathon mixed relay race walk, securing victory for herself and partner Álvaro Martín.
The Spanish team finished with a time of 2:50:31, winning by a significant margin of 51 seconds.
Pérez pulled away from Ecuador’s Glenda Morejón in the final stages of the race. Morejón, alongside her partner Brian Pintado, took silver.
Pintado made history as the first Ecuadorian to win two medals at the same Games, having previously won gold in the men’s 20km event.
Australia’s Rhydian Cowley and Jemima Montag claimed the bronze medal, finishing with a time of 2:51:38.
