Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been handed a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent Regulatory Commission for admitting breaches of FA Betting Rules.

Alongside the ban, Tonali has been fined £20,000 and cautioned by the FA regarding his future conduct.

The ban will remain suspended throughout the 2024/25 season, allowing Tonali to return to competitive play once his existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) concludes on 27 October 2024.

Tonali, who made a £55 million switch from AC Milan to Newcastle during the summer, had been prohibited from competitive football until August 2024 due to betting activities related to Italian matches.

Subsequently, he faced additional charges of 50 breaches of FA Rule E8 for betting on football games between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023 after joining Newcastle.

A statement released by Newcastle acknowledged Tonali’s exceptional cooperation and self-referral during the investigation.

The statement mentioned, “Sandro provided full admissions regarding his betting activities, especially in circumstances where no other evidence supported misconduct proceedings.”

Tonali is actively engaging in a therapeutic plan and educational program backed by the club, receiving full support while continuing to train alongside his teammates.
