Rent in Ghana not too expensive – Hawa Koomson

Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson has asked Ghanaians to stop complaining about the high cost of rent in the country. She believes rent in Ghana is on the downside, comparatively.

Citing an example of what happens in Canada and other developed countries in an interview on Accra-based Onua FM, she said, “People keep complaining about rent in Ghana should go to Canada. But last year I went to Canada, and they pay 2000 Canadian dollars every month for just a one-bedroom flat. So if you earn 3000 and have to pay rent of 2000 where are you going? If you’ve not visited someone’s farm you might think yours is bad,” she said.

The Minister, who doubles as a Member of Parliament, acknowledged that there is hardship everywhere and Ghana is even doing better than other countries.

To her, Ghanaians should not complain but rather back the government to deliver them from the challenges, which she indicates are global.

There is hardship everywhere. I am not saying people are not suffering, but when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing very well. There is a woman who says they should exchange Nana Addo’s salary for hers, but I can tell you that she won’t be satisfied even when she is given Nana Addo’s money because the higher she earns, the more he needs,” she said.
