In the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers on Wednesday, President John Dramani Mahama has announced interim ministerial appointments to maintain continuity in key government sectors.
A statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance, will also assume the role of Minister for Defence with immediate effect. Meanwhile, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has been appointed to act as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation until further notice.
The appointments come after the sudden deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who were among eight people killed in the helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The officials were en route to Obuasi on an official assignment when the accident occurred.
The President’s move is intended to ensure stability and seamless governance as the country mourns the loss of two prominent public servants.
National flags continue to fly at half-mast across Ghana as an official investigation into the cause of the crash is being conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces and relevant agencies.
President Mahama is expected to lead a state tribute in honour of the deceased ministers as preparations for their funerals begin.
