All twelve aspirants seeking to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Tamale Central Constituency have been successfully vetted and cleared by the party’s vetting committee.
The approval paves the way for the party’s internal elections, scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
The vetting exercise, which concluded on Sunday, August 31, was chaired by NDC Deputy General Secretary, Lawyer Barbara Serwaa Asamoah. In a statement following the vetting, she expressed admiration for the impressive calibre of aspirants, noting the inclusion of professors, lawyers, doctors, diplomats, and other accomplished professionals.
Lawyer Asamoah particularly praised the participation of three competent female aspirants, describing their presence as a “refreshing development” and a positive sign for women’s representation in politics.
The party has called on all aspirants to engage in peaceful, issue-based campaigns, and to avoid personal attacks or inflammatory rhetoric.
Among the aspirants is Professor Alidu Seidu, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, who pledged to run a respectful and decorous campaign. He acknowledged the somber context of the by-election, which was triggered by the tragic death of the sitting MP in a helicopter crash.
Another hopeful, Dr. Aliu Abdul Hamid, a civil engineer, expressed strong confidence in his chances, declaring that he would win the primary “by a landslide.”
Female aspirant Hajia Mulaika Sualisu appealed to delegates, especially women, to rally behind her bid, emphasizing the importance of women’s leadership in national development.
The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, also weighed in, urging all candidates and their supporters to prioritize unity and avoid any form of violence throughout the campaign period.
The upcoming primary is expected to be one of the most competitive in the region, as the NDC seeks to retain the seat under challenging circumstances.
