Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has cast doubt on the previous administration’s claim of constructing over 10,000 kilometers of roads during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Agbodza challenged the credibility of the figure, citing findings from a nationwide inspection he undertook shortly after assuming office.

“As soon as I assumed office, I went around the country to see the roads in Ghana,” he told journalists. “What I saw was that the over 10,000km of roads former President Akufo-Addo claimed he had constructed cannot be found. In fact, not even 1,000 kilometers of good road was seen.”

His remarks add fuel to the ongoing debate over the actual scale and quality of infrastructure developed under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. While the Akufo-Addo administration has consistently touted road construction as a flagship achievement, Mr. Agbodza’s statement suggests a major discrepancy between official records and physical reality.

The Minister’s comments may intensify calls for an independent audit of road sector projects executed under the previous government, as questions mount over the accuracy of reported accomplishments and the efficient use of public funds.
