Emma Raducanu’s promising Miami Open campaign ended with a narrow quarter-final loss to world number four Jessica Pegula.

Despite requiring medical attention, the 22-year-old Briton fought back to level the match, but Pegula regained control to win 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.

Raducanu played some of her finest tennis since her 2021 US Open triumph, particularly in the second set.

The world number 60 led 5-2 and had four set points in the eighth game before calling for a doctor. After her blood pressure was checked and ice towels were applied to cool her down, she resumed play.

Raducanu’s resilience and determination to win the second set were commendable. However, she couldn’t finish the job, as Pegula showcased why she is one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour.

“It was tough,” said Pegula, the US Open runner-up. “I just wanted to come out strong in the third set, really quick, and take control.”

The 31-year-old will face 19-year-old Alexandra Eala from the Philippines in Friday’s semi-finals. Eala continued her remarkable run by shocking five-time major champion Iga Swiatek earlier on Wednesday.

While Raducanu’s run in Miami has come to an end, her performance throughout the tournament demonstrated her resilience and ability to compete at a high level.

Despite the loss, the 22-year-old can take heart from her strong showing, particularly in the second set, and the experience gained will surely be valuable for her future endeavors on the WTA Tour.
