Patrick Johnson, Secretary General of the Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GHAMMAF) and the Ghana Adaptive Boxing Council (GABC), believes the launch of Para Boxing in Ghana offers a significant opportunity for individuals with disabilities to demonstrate their boxing skills.
He noted that Para Boxing not only promotes fitness and training as a leisure activity but also opens doors for lucrative competitive opportunities in Ghana and abroad.
He highlighted Ghana’s recognition as one of Africa’s top boxing nations, alongside South Africa and Kenya.
He also announced that select para boxers will be participating in an upcoming event in Poland, organized by Seven Star Promotion, with additional competitions available in the United States for dedicated athletes.
Johnson urged boxers and coaches to commit to rigorous training to enhance their performance and increase their chances of selection for these events.
He praised Mr. Hubert Kozub, CEO of Seven Star Promotion, for his efforts in organizing high-quality professional para boxing events and for his visit to Ghana, which inspired local boxers about forthcoming opportunities.
Recently, the Ghana Adaptive Boxing Federation, in collaboration with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), held an exhibition during fight night 5 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
With experience as Secretary General for various sports federations, including bodybuilding and taekwondo, Johnson emphasized the potential of sports to change lives and encouraged individuals with disabilities to take sports seriously.
He acknowledged that while Ghana Boxing has much potential, its advancement relies on effective leadership.
He commended former GBA presidents, Lawyers Moses Foh Amoaning and Peter Zwennes, for elevating the sport’s global image. “We’ve seen an increase in promotions and more boxers joining, which is promising,” he remarked.
Johnson appealed to businesses and affluent individuals to invest in sports for people with disabilities, highlighting the importance of support for this cause.
With 14 years of dedicated service, Johnson is regarded as an experienced technical official at the National Sports Authority (NSA).
A passionate sports enthusiast, he also enjoys football, volleyball, and table tennis, and participates in worship at the Love Community Chapel.
Additionally, he serves as Vice Chairman of the Association of Professional Boxing Commission (APBC), overseeing championship belts.
He holds a Master’s degree from the Malaysian-based Open University Malaysia (OUM) and studied at the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) in Ghana.
