Parliament has debunked claims on social media regarding the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
A recent video suggested that the Speaker had met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement following a call by the NDC caucus to declare the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Parliamentary Service categorically denied the allegations, describing them as “disingenuous” and “unfortunate.”
The statement clarified that the video in question, which has been widely circulated online, was actually recorded on July 4, 2024, when the Speaker led a delegation to present the maiden Democracy Cup to the President.
“There is no iota of truth in the insinuation made in the circulated video,” the statement read, emphasizing that the video had nothing to do with negotiations related to the seats of the four MPs.
Urged the public to disregard what it called an attempt to “hoodwink” people into believing in a false narrative and urged everyone to treat such claims with the “contempt they deserve.”
The statement was signed by Dr. Lawrence Kwarteng-Ashia, Deputy Director of Media Relations, on behalf of the Director of Media Relations.
Parliament further expressed its disappointment at those attempting to smear the Speaker’s image through deliberate misinformation.
