The Ghana Police Service has apprehended a ride-hailing driver, identified as an off-duty police officer, for the alleged murder of a male adult at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 18th August 2024, around 4:00 a.m.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Police Headquarters, the confrontation between the deceased, identified as Stanley Ahadzi, and General Constable Smith Gyeke arose over a disputed fare.
The disagreement reportedly escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Ahadzi by the off-duty officer.
The deceased’s body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue, where it is being preserved for autopsy.
Meanwhile, General Constable Smith Gyeke is currently in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, alongside members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), visited the family of the deceased.
They extended their condolences and assured the family that the incident would be thoroughly investigated, with a commitment that the officer involved would be held accountable.
The Police Service has also deployed a clinical psychologist and other officers to offer support to the bereaved family during this challenging time. The police further assured the public, particularly the family of the deceased, that justice will be served.
