The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has completed the vetting of five presidential hopefuls, taking a major step toward selecting its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The exercise, held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters in Accra, marked the transition from spirited internal campaigning to formal scrutiny by the party’s vetting committee.

Facing the panel were former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong; and former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Each aspirant was given the opportunity to present their vision for the party, defend their motivation for contesting, and demonstrate their commitment to party discipline, values, and unity. The process is a key requirement in the lead-up to the party’s national delegates congress scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Beyond the rigorous questioning, each candidate paid a combined fee of GH¢4.6 million, made up of GH¢100,000 for nomination forms, GH¢500,000 as a non-refundable filing fee, and a GH¢4 million Development Fee.

Three of the aspirants; Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Kwabena Agyepong, are no strangers to the race. Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Agyapong placed first and second respectively in the 2023 primaries, while Mr. Agyepong also contested in 2007 and 2023. Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Adutwum are entering the flagbearership race for the first time.

All five emerged from their vetting sessions with broad smiles and confident demeanours, signaling satisfaction with the process. The vetting committee is expected to submit its report to the party’s National Council by Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

According to the party’s timetable, any appeals or petitions challenging the vetting outcome must be submitted in the first week of October. The final list of qualified aspirants will be published on October 8, followed by balloting for positions on October 10. The Notice of Poll will be issued on October 17.

The NPP will hold its national congress to elect the 2028 presidential candidate on January 31, 2026. A run-off, if necessary, is scheduled for February 14, 2026.
