The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The party insists that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, legitimately won the 2024 parliamentary election.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong accused the EC of undermining the democratic will of voters by calling for a rerun, which he described as unjustified and politically unacceptable.
“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we are resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” Mr. Kodua asserted.
He emphasized that the party would not accept or participate in any rerun, reiterating that the results had already been verified and endorsed at the polling station level by EC officials and party agents.
“Under no circumstances will we go for a rerun. The New Patriotic Party will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections. What we are asking the Electoral Commission to do is to follow the court’s directive to finish the collation and declare our candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the MP for Ablekuma North,” he said.
Background
The Electoral Commission had earlier announced plans for a rerun on July 11 in the affected 19 polling stations, citing irregularities during the collation process. Specifically, the Commission pointed to the absence of validation by some Presiding Officers on scanned result sheets, which it said compromised the integrity of the collation.
However, the NPP insists that all due processes were followed and that the results in question were signed and confirmed by EC officials and party representatives at the various polling stations.
