The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has finalized all preparations for its presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026, promising a process that will be transparent, credible and secure.

According to the party, 211,849 accredited delegates will participate in the exercise at 333 polling centres spread across the country’s 276 constituencies. Voting is scheduled to take place between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, the Chairperson of the NPP Presidential Elections Committee, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, indicated that logistical arrangements, administrative planning and security measures had all been concluded.

He said the Electoral Commission (EC) would be solely responsible for conducting the primaries.

Mr Osei-Owusu explained that the EC worked in collaboration with the party to determine appropriate polling centres. While most constituencies will operate a single voting centre, additional centres were created in constituencies with large delegate numbers.

This arrangement, he noted, resulted in 333 polling stations nationwide, including one located at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.

He revealed that two initially proposed voting centres were changed following joint inspections by the EC and constituency officials. The changes, he said, were accepted by all five presidential hopefuls after consultations.

On the delegate register, Mr Osei-Owusu said the party adopted an open and inclusive validation process. He disclosed that after reviewing an initial list of 213,617 names, the party removed 2,827 deceased members and 653 individuals who had lost their membership status, leaving 211,849 eligible voters.

He added that representatives of all aspirants were involved in verifying the final register before it was approved for printing.

Mr Osei-Owusu further stated that the NPP had officially transferred responsibility for voting, counting, collation and declaration of results to the EC. Results will first be announced at polling centres, compiled at regional collation points and later declared at the party’s headquarters.

Touching on security, he said the Ghana Police Service would deploy between 70 and 150 officers to each polling centre, with military support provided in selected areas, particularly in parts of the Upper East Region.

He cautioned against the use of private security or vigilante groups during the primaries, warning that any such actions would be dealt with firmly by the police.

In addition, Mr Osei-Owusu announced that proxy voting would not be allowed during the primaries, describing the decision as a safeguard against disputes and allegations of electoral malpractice.

The presidential race will feature five contenders: Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Mr Osei-Owusu expressed confidence that the conduct and outcome of the primaries would be accepted by all contestants, stressing that the process would reflect the genuine will of party delegates.
