The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, officially commenced the vetting of aspirants seeking to lead the party into the 2026 presidential election.
The exercise is being held at the party’s national headquarters in Adabraka, Accra, and is overseen by a vetting committee chaired by former Defence Minister, Dr. Addo Kufuor.
The process began with the vetting of former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, and is expected to conclude today after all five aspirants are assessed.
The remaining aspirants include:
- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President
- Kennedy Agyapong, former Assin Central MP
- Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and current Minister for Food and Agriculture
- Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Education
The vetting follows the party’s nomination window, which opened in late July and closed on August 28. All five aspirants successfully filed their nominations by the deadline.
The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026. If no candidate secures an outright majority, a run-off between the top two contenders will be held on February 14, 2026.
Party leadership has called for a clean and respectful campaign, urging aspirants and their supporters to focus on ideas and unity as the party prepares for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
