The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has issued a bold ultimatum ahead of the Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025.
In an interview during the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, Mr. Baafi declared that he would resign from Parliament if the NPP fails to retain the Akwatia seat.
“If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words!” he stated emphatically.
Mr. Baafi also criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of failing to fulfil their 2024 campaign promises and lacking credibility with the electorate.
The by-election follows the untimely passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, who had represented the constituency under the NPP banner.
The race is expected to be highly competitive, with the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu facing off against the NDC’s Bernard Bediako. Both parties have ramped up their campaigns and expressed strong confidence in securing victory.
As election day approaches, the Akwatia constituency is drawing national attention, not only for its political significance but also for the high stakes surrounding Mr. Baafi’s dramatic pledge.
