Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the highly anticipated Akwatia by-election, delivering a significant win for the government in one of this year’s most fiercely contested electoral showdowns.
According to certified results from the Electoral Commission, Bediako secured 18,199 votes. His nearest competitor, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), followed with 15,235 votes. Owusu Patrick, representing the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), lagged far behind with just 82 votes. Of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were deemed valid, while 303 were rejected.
The by-election was held to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of MP Ernest Kumi earlier in the year. In the weeks leading up to the vote, the campaign trail saw heightened activity, with both the NDC and NPP mounting vigorous efforts to capture the constituency, widely regarded as a critical battleground.
Polling took place at 119 stations across Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Voting ended at 5 p.m., followed by sorting and counting in the presence of party representatives, security personnel, and independent election observers.
Celebrations erupted among NDC supporters following the announcement of the results, with crowds taking to the streets in Akwatia to celebrate Bediako’s win with cheers, music, and dancing.
Political observers note that the NDC’s triumph in Akwatia—an area known for swinging between the two major parties—could serve as a momentum booster for the ruling party as it eyes the 2028 general elections.
As the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako has pledged to build upon the legacy of his predecessor while working to further the government’s development efforts within the constituency.
