The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a “remarkable woman” whose lifelong dedication to women’s empowerment left an enduring impact on Ghana’s history.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on October 23, the NDC commended Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings for her tireless work through the 31st December Women’s Movement, where she championed education, economic empowerment, and social inclusion for countless Ghanaian women.

“As one of the founding pillars of the NDC, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings played an instrumental role in shaping the ideals and identity of our great party. Despite the ebbs and flows that led to her founding another party, her place in the story of the NDC will always remain significant,” the statement noted.
The party recalled that during the NDC’s Founders’ Day celebration on June 22, 2025, its leadership officially recognized Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings as the ‘Founding Mother’ of the NDC — a gesture that acknowledged her foundational role and lasting influence within the party.
“We take comfort in knowing that this acknowledgment was made while she was still with us, reaffirming that the NDC has always held her legacy in respect and gratitude,” the statement added.
On behalf of the NDC, Mr. Kwetey extended heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children and loved ones, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
“May the soul of Mrs. Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings, aged 76, passed away on Thursday at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. She was widely regarded as a towering figure in Ghana’s political and social history.
