The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been tasked by President Nana Akufo-Addo to orchestrate an election-rigging scheme in the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2024 general elections.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 19, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku’s recent promotion was part of a broader strategy to secure victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“In his current role, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been tasked by Akufo-Addo to carry out a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region, through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets, and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 this year,” he claimed.

He further alleged that the officer had been promised the position of Chief of Defence Staff if the NPP wins the election.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, the NDC has intelligence suggesting that Brigadier General Opoku is training NPP-affiliated thugs at the Asutuare military camp in preparation for the polls.

“Brigadier General Opoku plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters, and innocent civilians on Election Day.”
