The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially served notice to Multichoice Ghana Limited of its intention to suspend the company’s authorisation to operate its pay television service in Ghana.

The announcement, made on Thursday, August 7, concerns Multichoice’s Subscription Management Service under its Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television bouquet. The move follows rising public dissatisfaction with the company’s pricing structure.

In a statement issued in Accra, the NCA cited Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), as the legal foundation for its action, stating that Multichoice Ghana’s current pricing model is “deemed inimical to the public interest.”

While the statement did not detail the specific pricing practices under scrutiny, recent hikes in subscription fees have sparked complaints from consumers and prompted regulatory intervention.

Under the law, Multichoice Ghana has been given 30 days to respond to the notice. During this period, the company may file written objections, propose corrective measures, or provide justification to avoid a suspension of its operating licence.

The NCA described the move as part of a broader effort to ensure service providers operate fairly and with consumer protection at the forefront.

“This notice is part of a fair and transparent regulatory process aimed at ensuring that service providers operate in a manner that protects the interests of consumers,” the Authority stated.

Should the suspension take effect, it could affect access to satellite television services for thousands of households nationwide. The NCA, however, reassured the public that its decision is guided by a commitment to uphold public interest and to prevent exploitative pricing practices in the broadcasting sector.

Multichoice Ghana has not yet issued an official response. In the meantime, the Authority has urged subscribers to remain calm and pledged to provide further updates following the company’s reply.
