The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has destroyed a significant quantity of illicit drugs and banned substances seized during coordinated operations in the Savannah Region.

The enforcement actions were part of a broader crackdown on drug abuse and trafficking in the area. As a result of these operations, six individuals were arrested, tried, and convicted by the Damongo Circuit Court. Each convict received a fine of no less than 500 penalty units.

Speaking to Channel One News, Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe commended the efforts of security agencies and emphasized the region’s firm stance against illegal drug use.

“This exercise forms part of a larger initiative we have taken seriously. We are encouraged by the court’s support in sanctioning offenders and ordering the destruction of these substances,” he said.

Rashida Ewuntomah, the Savannah Regional Commander of NACOC, noted that plans are underway to strengthen the Commission’s presence in the region through the establishment of offices at the district and municipal levels.

She added, “We believe having officers stationed across the districts will give us quicker access to critical information. Until then, we remain committed to identifying and prosecuting those involved in drug-related activities.”

The recent destruction of seized substances is seen as a strong signal of the region’s ongoing efforts to curb the drug trade and promote public safety.
