Minority rejects claims of gov’t credit for economic gains

The Minority in Parliament has dismissed claims that recent improvements in Ghana’s economy are the result of effective management by the government under President John Mahama.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, January 26, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the economic upturn is largely driven by external factors rather than policy reforms or competence of the current administration.

He argued that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, debt relief, increased commodity exports and reduced government expenditure account for the gains being recorded.

“The economy may be improving, but not because of prudent management or new social interventions by this government,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

He stressed that the so-called gains were not the result of economic re-engineering by the administration, but rather favourable external conditions supporting the economy’s recovery.
