The Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has refuted claims made in a viral video alleged to show patients lying on the floor at the facility, stating that the footage does not accurately represent conditions in the hospital’s emergency wards.

He made the remarks during a working visit by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Saturday, March 21.

Dr. Adam acknowledged an increase in patient intake but clarified that while some patients may be seated due to high demand, there have been no instances of patients sleeping on the floor within the emergency unit.

“We are still reviewing the images to determine whether they may have been generated using artificial intelligence,” he added.

To help manage the growing number of patients and ease pressure on medical staff, Dr. Adam revealed that Outpatient Department (OPD) services have been extended from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Despite the surge, hospital management maintains that patient care remains a top priority, with ongoing interventions aimed at reducing congestion and improving service delivery.

Meanwhile, Mr Akandoh stressed the urgent need to expand bed capacity across hospital wards to alleviate pressure on emergency units. He called on health facilities to prioritise stabilising patients while efforts are made to improve infrastructure and overall capacity.

“I realised that there is a need for more beds in the wards so that, at all times, space can be created at the emergency unit. It makes more sense to have an available bed at emergency than to say the wards are full,” he stated.

He further urged healthcare providers to ensure patients are promptly stabilised as part of efforts to enhance care delivery across facilities.
