A four-month-old baby is still missing nearly two months after the June 29 floods that swept through several parts of Ghana, leaving 39 people dead.
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, disclosed this on Monday, August 24, during the Government Accountability Series, stating that the child is currently the only person officially listed as missing from the disaster.
Mr Muntaka said the floods affected 91,989 people belonging to 18,398 households across 77 districts in seven regions.
“A total of 91,989 persons from 18,398 households were victims of the disaster. One person remained missing, a four-month-old baby, and 39 deaths,” he said.
Greater Accra suffered the heaviest impact, with 56,022 people affected in 27 districts. The region also recorded the highest number of deaths, with 17 fatalities.
The Central Region recorded 21,882 affected persons across 16 districts, alongside eight deaths, while 9,466 people in seven districts of the Volta Region were affected, with four fatalities reported.
In the Ashanti Region, 1,461 people across 16 districts were affected by the floods. The Western North Region recorded 937 affected persons in six districts without any reported deaths.
The Western Region also reported about 2,000 people affected across two districts.
One district in the Eastern Region was also impacted, although no figure was provided for the number of people affected there.
The latest figures provide an indication of the scale of the June 29 disaster, which disrupted communities across multiple regions and left thousands of households affected.
Despite efforts to account for those caught up in the floods, the whereabouts of the four-month-old child remain unknown.
The Interior Minister did not disclose further information about how the baby went missing or provide an update on the current status of efforts to locate the child.
Authorities have so far recorded 39 deaths from the floods, with the missing infant remaining the only outstanding missing-person case officially linked to the disaster.
