Joseph Paintsil scored the opening goal to help LA Galaxy secure a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the 2024 MLS Cup on Saturday, December 7.

The Ghana international was played through on goal and calmly slotted the ball past Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel from close range to give Galaxy the lead in the 9th minute. Paintsil dedicated the goal to injured playmaker Riqui Puig.

Just four minutes later, Dejan Joveljic doubled the lead for LA Galaxy, but the Red Bulls responded in the 27th minute through Sean Nealis to pull one back. The teams went into halftime with Galaxy leading 2-1.

With the win, LA Galaxy claimed their sixth MLS Cup title, further extending their record for the most championships in league history.

Paintsil joined the club last winter in a reported $9 million-plus transfer from Belgian giants Genk.
