Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won by unanimous decision against Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng in the women’s 66kg welterweight semifinal, advancing to Friday’s gold medal match against China’s Yang Liu.
As Khelif entered the ring at Roland-Garros Stadium, the crowd cheered loudly, while Suwannapheng faced some boos. Algerian fans waved flags and chanted her name throughout the match.
Khelif, who is the fifth seed in her weight class, controlled all three rounds. After her victory was announced, she waited for Suwannapheng to acknowledge the crowd before helping her exit the ring. Khelif then celebrated by dancing and taking selfies with fans, while the crowd continued to chanted her name.
With such strong support, Khelif is expected to be a big crowd favorite in Friday’s final.
