The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has officially broken ground for the construction of a new ward complex at the Police Hospital in Accra.

The ceremony, held on Monday, August 11, 2025, was attended by members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) and other senior officers.

The new facility is intended to provide a dedicated and modern space for serving police personnel, their families, and retired officers who require medical care. It is part of ongoing efforts by the Police Administration to improve the welfare of the broader police community.

Speaking at the sod-cutting event, the IGP revealed that the concept for the project was born during a recent visit to an ailing colleague at the Police Hospital. That visit, he said, highlighted the urgent need for additional and better-equipped ward space to support the growing healthcare demands of the service.

“The new ward will not only support officers currently in service but also cater to retired personnel, many of whom face more severe health challenges,” Mr. Yohuno stated. “It will also be open to the extended police family and the general public, creating a healing environment that reflects dignity and care.”

While the project is being initiated using available resources, the IGP appealed to individuals, businesses, and the general public to lend their support. He emphasized that collaborative efforts would be crucial to completing the facility in a timely and sustainable manner.

Mr. Yohuno expressed confidence that the new ward complex, once completed, would significantly boost the healthcare capacity of the Police Hospital and contribute to the long-term well-being of police personnel.

“We believe this project will not only improve access to quality healthcare for our officers and their families but also extend the lives and service of those who have dedicated themselves to protecting the nation,” he said.

The IGP called on Ghanaians and organisations to join hands with the Police Service to bring the project to fruition.
