A six-member committee appointed by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to investigate the alleged assault of a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) has released its findings, contradicting claims of serious injury.
The alleged incident occurred on August 17, 2025, when nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei reported being physically attacked by social activist Ralph Saint Williams, who accused nurses of negligence on that day. Following the complaint, the Minister of Health established the committee to look into the matter.
At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, August 27, the committee revealed that medical records showed no fractures or dislocations sustained by the nurse. According to the report, Ms. Bortei was treated with pain relief, received psychosocial support, and was advised to rest. The trauma specialist who attended to her was present during the committee’s visit to the hospital.
While the nurse did report pain and injuries to her left hand the day after the incident, there was no evidence of a fractured left wrist or dislocated right shoulder joint, the report confirmed.
The committee also highlighted ongoing systemic challenges at Ridge Hospital, noting that the emergency department is frequently operating at nearly full capacity and handles most trauma and acute referrals in the Greater Accra Region.
Regarding the accident victim whose case sparked the unrest, the committee stated he had been treated for a basal skull fracture, discharged, and scheduled for outpatient follow-up. At the time of the committee’s visit, the patient was fully conscious and communicating well.
Minister Akandoh pledged swift implementation of the committee’s recommendations to help restore the hospital’s reputation and added that the report would be made available to the courts as the case proceeds through the judiciary.
