The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed allegations of political bias following its decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The EC’s clarification comes amid growing accusations that it is favouring the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the rerun, scheduled for Friday, July 11. The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected the Commission’s decision, describing it as “unjust,” and has officially withdrawn from the process.
However, in a surprising turn, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has opted to break ranks with the party’s directive and will participate in the rerun. Legal and administrative attempts by the NPP to halt the election have so far been unsuccessful.
Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday, the EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, reaffirmed the Commission’s neutrality and commitment to a transparent electoral process.
“We state categorically that Ghana’s electoral management body is an independent body and will not be dictated to by any institution or any person. Our track record speaks for itself,” he said.
The rerun was triggered by disputes and irregularities reported in the initial results from some polling stations, leading the EC to order fresh voting in the affected areas to ensure credibility and fairness.
