Presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, New Patriotic Party (NPP) has outlined an ambitious plan to significantly expand public infrastructure across the country.

The plan, which is a major highlight of the 2024 NPP manifesto, promises to bring about transformative development, focusing on enhancing key sectors such as transportation, housing, and public services.

At the core of Bawumia’s infrastructure strategy is a commitment to partner with the private sector. This collaboration aims to finance, build, and rent essential public infrastructure, including schools, housing, water systems, roads, and equipment. This public-private partnership approach is expected to mobilize resources and expertise to address the nation’s growing infrastructure needs.

In a bid to ensure sustainable maintenance of public assets, the manifesto proposes to revive and resource the Public Works Department (PWD). The PWD will be tasked with the crucial role of maintaining public infrastructure, ensuring that these investments are preserved and serve the public effectively over the long term.

To further enhance connectivity and accessibility, the NPP plans to expand the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). This initiative will provide assistance to local governments for road maintenance, improving rural and urban road networks to facilitate economic activities and access to essential services.

A significant part of the infrastructure plan includes the development of the railway network, particularly focusing on the Western and Eastern Lines. This move is aimed at bolstering the country’s transportation sector, easing the movement of goods and people, and promoting regional trade.

In addition, the manifesto outlines a vision to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Tamale Airport. This facility will cater to aviation cargo, horticultural cargo, and logistics, enhancing the airport’s capacity and positioning it as a key hub in the region.

Another noteworthy project is the commencement of the development of Cape Coast Airport. This project, which will be funded under a $2 billion facility from Korea, is expected to boost tourism and economic activities in the Central Region.

Moreover, the NPP plans to collaborate with the private sector to build an airport in the Upper East Region. This initiative, along with the goal to achieve universal electricity access, underscores the party’s commitment to ensuring equitable development across the country.

As the 2024 elections approach, Bawumia’s infrastructure plan is poised to be a critical component of the NPP’s campaign, promising to drive economic growth, improve public services, and uplift communities nationwide.
