The Amasaman High Court has reduced the 15-year prison sentence imposed on controversial evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, to 12 calendar months, ruling that the original punishment was harsh and excessive.

In its judgment, the court upheld Nana Agradaa’s conviction but exercised its discretionary powers to vary the sentence handed down by the trial court. The revised sentence takes effect from July 3, 2025—the date of her conviction—meaning she will serve a total of one year in prison.

The High Court held that while the offences for which Nana Agradaa was convicted merited punishment, the severity of the initial 15-year sentence was disproportionate to the circumstances of the case, justifying a significant reduction.

Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess who later rebranded herself as a Christian evangelist, was convicted on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.

The convictions stem from a televised broadcast aired in 2022, during which she claimed to possess spiritual powers capable of doubling money. Prosecutors told the court that these claims induced several individuals to hand over large sums of money in the expectation of miraculous financial returns—promises that were never fulfilled.

The ruling brings partial relief to the outspoken religious figure, whose case has attracted widespread public attention and debate over sentencing, religious exploitation, and consumer protection in Ghana.
