Pressure group Arise Ghana has continued its demonstration for a second consecutive day outside the United States Embassy in Accra, insisting that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta must return to Ghana to answer questions over alleged financial improprieties.

Protesters gathered at the embassy on Tuesday, chanting and holding placards with messages calling for Mr Ofori-Atta’s return. Organisers say the action will persist until the former minister comes back to the country to cooperate fully with ongoing investigations.

Explaining the choice of venue, Director of Field Operations of the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, told JoyNews that the embassy was selected to draw international attention to the matter.

“When Americans see protests, they understand that citizens are making a serious demand,” he said, adding that public pressure can help accelerate accountability processes.

Mr Adorye disclosed that the group has planned the protest to last 14 working days, excluding weekends, and warned that further actions would be taken if their demands are ignored.

The demonstration coincides with investigations being conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into a number of transactions authorised during Mr Ofori-Atta’s time as finance minister.

Mr Ofori-Atta served in the role from 2017 to 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and has been linked to several high-profile controversies involving procurement and public finance management. The OSP has indicated that its probes cover issues such as revenue assurance agreements, debt restructuring arrangements and payments made through sole-sourcing processes.

Although his legal team has previously stated that he is prepared to cooperate with lawful investigations, citing health and security reasons for his stay abroad, Arise Ghana maintains that true accountability requires his physical presence in Ghana.
