The Office of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has categorically denied allegations suggesting that he attempted to overturn the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold early primaries ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, the President’s office described the claims as “completely false” and politically motivated.
The statement emphasized that President Akufo-Addo had not petitioned the party leadership nor made any attempt—direct or indirect—to influence the scheduling of the NPP’s internal electoral calendar.
“The President has not made any such requests to the party—either through a petition or by any other means—and has no intention of doing so,” the statement read.
The denial follows reports and social media commentary alleging that President Akufo-Addo was lobbying to delay the NPP’s National Delegates Conference and possibly alter the timetable for selecting a new presidential candidate.
According to the President’s communications team, these claims are part of a broader “agenda” designed to create division within the party.
“These stories are driven by an agenda which has nothing to do with improving the fortunes of the NPP,” the statement added.
The clarification comes just days before the party’s upcoming Annual Delegates Conference, scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Key constitutional reforms, including proposals from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee and unresolved issues from the 2019 conference, are expected to be discussed.
The NPP has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding internal democracy and the rule of law as it prepares for future elections. Party leaders have urged members to avoid misinformation that could undermine party unity.
