Three people have been confirmed dead, while 20 others have been rescued following the collapse of an uncompleted four-storey building near the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School in Accra.
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, when a group of worshippers had gathered inside the structure, which had reportedly been converted into a makeshift church. The collapse caused panic in the area and triggered a swift emergency response.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the distress call was received at 5:01 p.m., with the first and second rescue teams from the National Headquarters arriving at the scene at 5:17 p.m. and 5:19 p.m., respectively, to begin search and rescue operations.
Initial reports indicated that several individuals were trapped beneath the rubble. In total, 23 people—comprising 15 females and 8 males, including three minors—were caught in the collapse.
Through coordinated efforts involving GNFS personnel, other emergency agencies, and local residents, 20 victims were successfully rescued and transported to various health facilities for treatment.
However, three victims—two females and one male—lost their lives. Their bodies have since been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation.
Earlier during the operation, the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Alex King Nartey, indicated that rescue teams were relying on faint cries from beneath the debris to locate survivors.
“Rescue mission is still ongoing. The voices are growing fainter because our officers are relying on people calling for help to trace where people are. For now, people are still down there. We are not sure of the number,” he said at the time.
Rescue and security personnel remain at the scene to complete debris clearing and ensure safety, while authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the collapse.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has commended its personnel and partner agencies for their swift response and professionalism.
“Our deepest condolences go to the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the Service stated.
