Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama is considering legal action against a police special operations unit known as the Black Maria, following what he describes as a brutal assault in Tamale.

Addressing the media on Monday, March 23, Mahama said the decision to seek justice goes beyond his personal experience, warning that the incident raises broader concerns about public safety and police accountability.

He revealed that the alleged assault left him with significant injuries, including damaged teeth and severe bruising, disrupting both his health and professional schedule.

The artist noted that he had to cancel a series of international trips, including academic engagements across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Mahama also questioned the conduct of the police unit, alleging a pattern of intimidation and excessive force.

He warned that such incidents risk creating an environment where young people feel unsafe or discouraged from remaining in the country.

In response, the Black Maria team has denied the claims, stating that the situation arose during a routine traffic operation involving a non-compliant driver.

Authorities have also released video footage linked to the incident, but Mahama insists the material has been edited to misrepresent events.

The case continues to draw public attention, as calls for accountability and transparency within law enforcement intensify.
