Anthropic proposes 5% share allocation for new public-benefit fund

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has proposed allocating 5% of its shares to a new public-benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval.

In its October 18 announcement, the company said the fund could support nonprofits, direct assistance to selected populations and responses to artificial intelligence’s impact on workers.

The proposed fund would be a wholly owned limited liability company. Its stake could increase at the board’s discretion as Anthropic’s valuation rises. Equity held by the fund would not be used for lobbying or political donations.

Anthropic said it would release further details about governance and valuation milestones in the coming months. It has not named beneficiaries or announced an application process.

Reuters reported that the initiative comes as Anthropic prepares a major stock-market listing. It operates as a public benefit corporation, which requires management to consider broader interests alongside investor returns.

The announcement concerns a proposed equity allocation, not a confirmed distribution of cash grants.
