The Adjen Kotoku Onion Market has been shut down following a violent confrontation involving armed men from a rival faction who allegedly stormed the area in a bid to take control.

The incident left several traders injured and has disrupted activities at one of Ghana’s major onion trading hubs, raising fresh concerns over security and stability within the market.

The closure is also said to be linked to increasing allegations of political interference in the management of the facility, further deepening tensions among stakeholders.

Spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, confirmed the development on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, describing the situation as alarming for traders whose livelihoods depend on the market.

“We can confirm that the market has been shut down following the attack,” he stated, noting that fear has gripped traders and brought business operations to a halt.

Meanwhile, the situation appears to have taken a regional dimension, with reports indicating that trucks transporting onions to Ghana have been blocked in Nigeria. The move is believed to be a retaliatory response tied to an earlier dispute involving some Ghanaian traders.

Traders are now appealing to authorities to deploy adequate security to restore calm and ensure the continuous supply of onions to local markets.
