Brazil elections: Lula Da Silva secures fourth win

49

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth presidential election, defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro after a closely contested campaign.

Lula, who previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010 and returned to office in January 2023, secured victory in Sunday’s run-off after trailing Bolsonaro in the first round of voting on October 4.

The result marks a political comeback for the veteran left-wing leader, whose campaign regained momentum through street demonstrations and an extensive social media drive following his first-round defeat.

Lula’s victory also runs counter to a broader political shift across Latin America, where voters have increasingly turned to conservative leaders in countries including Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Despite his electoral success, the former metalworker faces significant political and economic challenges as he prepares for another term, including domestic political divisions and strained relations with the administration of United States President Donald Trump.

His new term is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027.
