The Ghana Education Service (GES) says continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School are expected to return to school next week, following a closure that has kept them at home since August.

The school was shut down on August 5 after violent disturbances linked to reports of suspected human remains found buried on the school compound.

The unrest reportedly involved students confronting the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, over the incident. Mr Abdulai was allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries that required further treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

The disturbances also led to the destruction of school property, including staff bungalows and vehicles, while six students were arrested in connection with the incident.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, the GES said preparations for the return of continuing students were at an advanced stage.

First-year students, meanwhile, have been on campus since September 18.

The Service has clarified that the campus disturbances are separate from the sexual abuse allegations involving Mr Abdulai, which came to public attention following an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. Those allegations are being investigated separately.

The GES says further information on the resumption arrangements will be communicated as necessary.
