Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says government is working to complete the validation of records of teachers currently on strike to enable the payment of outstanding monies owed them.

Mr Iddrisu says the first tranche of the payments is expected to be processed by October 16, once the validation exercise is completed and the relevant data submitted to the Ministry of Finance.

He made the announcement during a visit to the data processing centre where the records of the affected teachers are being verified.

The Minister directed officials handling the exercise to speed up the process while ensuring that the records are accurately validated.

He said government is targeting the validation of at least 51,000 teachers by Monday, October 5, as part of efforts to address concerns raised by the pre-tertiary teacher unions.

According to Mr Iddrisu, the validated data will be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance to begin arrangements for the supplementary payments.

He further called on the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to expedite the process, stressing that the government’s commitment can only be fulfilled when the records of eligible teachers are properly verified.

The Minister said government is targeting the validation of 52,000 out of the 80,000 records as it works towards resolving the outstanding payment issues.
