Commuters will pay revised fares for public transport across the country from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following an 8% increase announced by transport operators.
The new rates, agreed by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), cover intra-city trotros, shared taxis and long-distance journeys.
Passengers who currently pay GH¢5 on an intra-city route will now pay GH¢5.50, while those paying GH¢10 will be charged GH¢11.
Other fares have also been adjusted, with the GH¢30 rate moving to GH¢32.40. A journey previously costing GH¢34 will now attract a fare of GH¢36.80.
For shared taxis, the minimum fare listed for journeys of up to four kilometres rises from GH¢2.60 to GH¢2.90.
Trips covering up to 40 kilometres will increase from GH¢18.70 to GH¢20.20.
Passengers travelling between cities will equally see changes in fares.
The GH¢25 fare will rise to GH¢27, while a GH¢100 journey will cost GH¢108. At the top end of the schedule, the GH¢300 fare has been adjusted to GH¢324.
The unions say the new fares were calculated by applying the 8% increase to the approved rates introduced in May 2025.
They point to higher fuel-related costs, spare parts, vehicle repairs and other expenses associated with operating commercial vehicles as reasons for the review.
The GPRTU and GRTCC say government measures aimed at reducing the cost of diesel have helped to contain the extent of the increase.
Operators have been instructed to display copies of the new fare schedule at their respective terminals and loading points.
The unions have also warned drivers against demanding fares above the approved amounts, with violators expected to face sanctions.
The new fare regime takes effect nationwide on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
