Ghana began with promise. Agnes Yeboah forced Ecuador’s goalkeeper into an early save, but the South Americans soon took control. They struck after just two minutes, leaving the Black Princesses chasing the game from the start.
The pressure grew in the 16th minute when Ecuador doubled their lead. Ghana then suffered another setback as goalkeeper Najat Abdul Salam went off with an injury. Precious Asante came on, but the damage was already done.
Ghana tried to find a way back before the break. Their passing lacked rhythm, and they struggled to create clear openings against a well-organised Ecuador defence. The 2-0 scoreline at half-time left Sampson with a difficult task.
The second half offered hope, but Ecuador soon ended it. They added a third goal inside 24 minutes after the restart. Ghana could not find a response, and the final whistle confirmed a night of frustration.
The result also adds to a worrying World Cup record. Since making their debut in 2010, Ghana have won only one of their opening matches at the tournament. This defeat shows how quickly a slow start can turn into a major problem on the world stage.
Sampson also had to cope without centre-back Margaret Agyapomaa. She missed the game after her red card in the final qualifier against Uganda. Her absence made Ghana’s defensive task even harder.
The other Group C match ended 1-1 between South Korea and France. That result gives Ghana a chance to recover, but the next challenge will be tough.
