Eddie Howe’s remarkable journey at Newcastle United has come to an emotional end. Howe arrived at St James’ Park in November 2021 with Newcastle sitting 19th in the Premier League and fighting relegation. Backed by the club’s new Saudi-backed ownership, he quickly changed the mood on Tyneside, guiding the Magpies to safety before leading them into the UEFA Champions League just a season later.
His achievements extended beyond league progress. Howe ended Newcastle’s 70 year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the 2025 Carabao Cup and secured Champions League qualification twice. He leaves with 84 Premier League victories from 179 matches, a record bettered only by Kevin Keegan in terms of win percentage.

Reports also suggested Howe had grown frustrated with the club’s evolving transfer strategy and his reduced influence over recruitment following the appointment of sporting director Ross Wilson.
His final match, a 4-1 pre season defeat to Bristol City, now serves as the closing image of an otherwise successful reign. Sources indicate Howe has no immediate plans to return to management and instead wants time away from football before deciding his next move.
Attention now turns to Matthias Jaissle, who is expected to become Newcastle’s next head coach. The 38-year-old German arrives with an impressive reputation after winning back to back AFC Champions League titles with Al Ahli and consecutive Austrian Bundesliga crowns with Red Bull Salzburg.
Replacing Howe will not be easy. He restored belief, delivered silverware, and returned Newcastle to Europe’s biggest stage. The challenge for Jaissle is not simply to build on that foundation, but to convince supporters that another successful era is just beginning.
